Today in class, both Studio Art and Painting students began new project. Find the information below for what's going on in each of the two classes.
Studio Art
Today, students learned about zentangles. According to zentangle.com, The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Almost anyone can use it to create beautiful images. It increases focus and creativity, provides artistic satisfaction along with an increased sense of personal well being. The Zentangle Method is enjoyed all over this world across a wide range of skills, interests and ages.
Students viewed two videos in class, one just to show an example of a patterned zentangle which started from a flower, and the other to show how to create a complete zentangle drawing simply by tracing your hand to start. Both videos can be viewed here...

Students were also given a sketch sheet to start designing their own zentangle patterns, which they will be working on for the next few days, until they are ready to begin the project, itself.
Painting
Painting students also began a new project today, which we are calling Value Portraits. Students will be able to choose a photograph or image of their choice for this project. Once they have chosen an image, students will use the Adobe Photoshop program to render and distort their image so that it is black and white and has only five solid color values. Once this is done, students will save their image, and recreate in by drawing it in a much larger scale onto canvas board. Once this is complete, students will paint their value portraits with a valued color of their choice - typically black and white, but they can choose whichever color they would like.
Most students will choose to create a painting of a famous athlete, musician, or actor, however some will choose to do their own photos of family, friends or even themselves. The choice is up to each individual student.
Below are some examples of similar value portrait paintings that have been completed by others.
