2013-2014Stained Glass Projects (Art Design Students) (4/21/2014)Parents of Design Students,
By this point, I've hope you've been able to receive a permission form for students to begin work on their stained glass projects. On this form, I'm asking that you give your consent for students to participate in creating a stained glass piece of artwork. I ask for this consent as students will be hand-cutting glass themselves as they work on their assignment over the next 3-4 weeks (possibly until the end of the school year). This process, if not done carefully and with caution, can cause students to cut themselves as we are working with sheets of glass and cutting them, by hand, into small pieces. The parental consent form was sent home last Monday, April 21, and I asked that these be returned by Friday, April 25. I have still not received about half of the consent forms. On this form, you'll also see that students need to bring in their own 8"x10" glass frame or bring in $6 so I can purchase frames for them. As always, please contact me should you have any questions! The parental consent form is attached with this post. Identity Masks (2/17/2014)Studio Art students have started working in the clay medium with their "Identity Mask Sculptures," and will continue to work on these new creations. This is a new project this year, and they're learning this new process as much as their teacher. It's hard to believe that once their clay has been fired, students will be able to use colored pencils to actually color their masks instead of using the tedious glaze process.
The Ohio Fine Arts Standards for this assignment are as follows: HS Intermediate: 1PR - Demonstrate proficient technical skills and craftsmanship with various art media when creating images from observation, memory, or imagination. HS Intermediate: 4PR - Establish and apply appropriate levels of craftsmanship to complete artwork. HS Intermediate: 3RE - Expand the use of arts-specific vocabulary to define and describe techniques and materials used to create works of art. Students, if you need the review the handouts for this project, you can find them here! ![]()

Word Art (2/17/2014)Art Design students have started the planning and practice processes for their new project, word art. Students will be realistically illustrating a word or phrase of their choice by creating three-dimensionally drawn letters, filled with realistic colored pencil drawings that describe their chosen word. Students are learning the process of blending and shading techniques while using tints and shades using colored pencils.
The Ohio Fine Arts Standards for this assignment are as follows: HS Accelerated: 1PR - Demonstrate increased technical skill and craftsmanship with various art media when creating images from observation, memory and imagination. HS Intermediate: 6PR - Incorporate visual literacy as a means to create images that advance individual expression and communication. HS Accelerated: 2PR: Make informed choices in the selection of materials and techniques that relate to solving a visual problem. HS Beginning: 3RE: Use appropriate vocabulary to define and describe techniques and materials used to create works of art. Students, if you need the review the handouts for this project, you can find them here! ![]()

Alebrijes (Mexican Folk Art Sculptures)Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. The first alebrijes, along with use of the term, originated with Pedro Linares. After dreaming of the creatures while sick in the 1930s, he began to create what he saw in cardboard and paper mache.
Students viewed 2-4 videos in class regarding the Mexican "Day of the Dead" or Dia de los Muertos. Two videos portray celebrations of the Day of the Dead in different cultures. One video shows images of parade floats from a Day of the Dead parade celebration, and the last video shows examples of student-made alebrijes from a high school in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Videos can be viewed here... Students were also given a handout that includes the background story of Alebrijes, as well as step-by-step directions for the entire paper mache project. There was also a handout provided for students to complete sketches to gather ideas before beginning the project. Both sheets can be found below!
ZentanglesAccording to zentangle.com, The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Almost anyone can use it to create beautiful images. It increases focus and creativity, provides artistic satisfaction along with an increased sense of personal well being. The Zentangle Method is enjoyed all over this world across a wide range of skills, interests and ages.
Students viewed two videos in class, one just to show an example of a patterned zentangle which started from a flower, and the other to show how to create a complete zentangle drawing simply by tracing your hand to start. Both videos can be viewed here... Pink-Out Football Game T-Shirts![]() FR Indians Fans,
How many of you have been touched by or know someone who has been touched by breast cancer? Almost all of us have or know someone who has! Once again this year, the Fort Recovery High School cheerleaders will be sponsoring a “Pink Out” football game in honor of those who have been touched by breast cancer. The “Pink Out” game will be at the home varsity football game on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18 against Minster. The attached order form (below) includes short sleeve and long sleeve t-shirts that we would like to see everyone wearing at the home varsity football game on OCTOBER 18. We are dedicating that game to those who have fought, are fighting and will continue to fight against breast cancer, and especially to those who have battled the disease with strength and courage. The FRHS cheerleaders will be DONATING 100% of the proceeds from the t-shirt sales to the Susan G.Komen “For the Cure” foundation, as well as other local breast cancer support groups. The t-shirts will be pink this year and will be printed on the front AND back of the shirt, featuring a football player in a purple jersey and the ever-famous pink ribbon (the design is in the upper right-hand corner of this post). Please have your order form returned to your student’s teacher, and they will be sure to get the order forms and money over to Amanda Everman at the high school. All checks should be made out to Fort Recovery Schools. ALL FORMS AND MONEY ARE DUE NO LATER THAN THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2013! Thank you so much for your support! August 26, 2013Students, here is the electronic file you may choose to use in class today to fill in your definitions of the Elements of Art. If you choose to type your answers, make sure I can tell a difference between your answers and the correct answers. You can do two separate documents, different font colors, fonts, or choose to do something different. Either way, just make sure I can tell a difference.
August 21, 2013
Welcome back! It's hard to believe another summer has come and gone. It's going to be a fun and exciting learning experience in art class this year at Fort Recovery High School. Let's start off the school year right, so we have no future problems or issues. Make sure you check out our "Blog" section to see what we're up to every day! Most importantly, please find the attached syllabus for both the Studio Art and Painting courses. All students will receive this syllabus on the first day of school along with a detached half-sheet, asking for their signature as well as a parent or guardian's signature, stating they understand the rules. The syllabus signature sheet is due for 10 points no later than Friday, August 31. ![]()
